Scientists from the UniLodz Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection Are Organising a Fundraiser and Asking for Support for Ukrainian Soldiers in the Fight Against the Russian Invasion

Another anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine is approaching – four years of bloody struggles between Ukrainian soldiers and the invaders for freedom and the nation's survival have now passed. Shortly after the aggression began, in 2022, a group of scientists from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz, in collaboration with colleagues from the Institute of Biology in Odessa, initiated a collection of medical equipment to rescue soldiers wounded on the front. The collection continues to this day.

It is updated with the most urgently needed equipment for rescuers and soldiers who, risking their health and lives, directly repel enemy attacks on the front.

Our current goal is to raise PLN 15,000 for professional medical equipment that saves lives in the so-called "golden hour" after a wound. Everyone can help those fighting; every donation is priceless. We sincerely thank you, dear donors, for every złoty

– the organisers of the fundraiser write asking for information about it to be shared as widely as possible.

Funds raised through a fundraiser organised by scientists from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, University of Lodz will be used to purchase:

  • CAT (Gen 7) tactical tourniquets – absolutely essential for controlling bleeding.
  • Israeli compression dressings – for securing deep wounds.
  • Chest Seal ventilated occlusive dressings – life-saving in the case of chest injuries.
  • Essential accessories: waterproof markers and Rescue Ready emergency scissors.
  • Training equipment: lymph node and evisceration trainers – so that medics can practice saving lives in the most extreme conditions.

Cooperation between hydrobiologists from the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection at the University of Lodz and their colleagues from the Institute of Biology in Odessa dates back to 2009. It was then that joint research projects and scientific expeditions to Ukraine began. Dr Yurij Kvach was one of the Ukrainian collaborators with the Polish side. Together with scientists from the University of Lodz he, among other things, studied fish and aquatic invertebrates.

Dr Kvacz has actively volunteered to help the Ukrainian army defending the country against the invasion since the first day of the Russian aggression against Ukraine in February 2022. He delivered water to checkpoints, washed clothes, weaved camouflage nets and delivered food and equipment to the Odessa Territorial Defense Brigades. He personally raised money to purchase these sometimes expensive items, also spreading appeals for help among his colleagues and friends. Hydrobiologists from the University of Lodz immediately decided to help their colleague and the soldiers he supports by launching a public fundraising campaign in Poland and making the necessary purchases.

The needs are growing. Anyone wishing to financially support Ukrainian soldiers can do so through the Zrzutka.pl website.
