Books can be ordered only electronically.

The Library offers readers 8 desktop computers with access to the library catalogue, 23 computers with access to library databases and the Internet for research purposes, a scanner and a reading room with 31 spots. In addition, it is possible to use Wi-Fi.

In the reading room there is free access to shelves with new books arranged in 34 sections of the two collections: economics and sociology (about 15,000 volumes), as well as current journals arranged also by section and some archival journals. There is an interlibrary loan service in the Library, which makes it possible to order books from other libraries in Poland.

They can be accessed freely, without reservation or prior ordering. Current (and some archived) magazines are also arranged by section. Helpful descriptions can be found on the shelves.

Interlibrary Loan Service

Interlibrary Loan Service

The Interlibrary Loan Service fulfills orders for loans of books that are not available in other libraries in Łódź. Orders are usually fulfilled within 1-3 weeks. You can place an order for up to 5 publications at a time. The loan period for library collections is determined by the lending library.

To place an order, please contact wmb.eksoc@uni.lodz.pl by email.

Lending Desk

The lending desk is located on the third floor of building E of our Faculty. It is open during the Library's working hours. Books ordered via the online catalog can be picked up within 3 days. You must come in person to collect your books and present a valid library card (usually encoded on your student ID card). Orders are processed during the rental service's opening hours in two-hour cycles. The last orders are processed one hour before the library closes. All orders placed later are processed the following day.

Returns can be made to the librarian on duty (during Library opening hours) or by placing the books in the drop box or book dispencer (Tue-Sun 7am-9pm).

The Library of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology accepts returns of books borrowed exclusively from our library.

Book Dispenser

książkomat

Books from our Library can be ordered to the book dispenser located on the ground floor of building E. Orders to the book dispenser are processed on working days. Ordered books are held for 3 days and can be collected between 7am and 8pm.

Persons registered with the University of Łódź Libraries remotely who have not yet used the book dispenser are requested to report in person to the BWES Lending Desk with a valid ID card before picking up their ordered books for the first time - it is necessary to activate it in the library system. This is a technical requirement, and failure to comply will prevent you from using the book dispenser.

Drop Box

The drop box is located on the ground floor of building E, opposite the reception desk. It is a gray box marked with the Library logo, where you can return books to our library. It works “analogically” - there is no need to scan your library card or specific book code. You can put books in it when the book return machine is full or when books are returned on someone else's behalf without a library card.

Books are removed from the drop box twice a day and scanned (returned in the system) at the Circulation Desk. We only accept returns of books from our departmental library.

FAQ

How can I register with the Library?

To become a reader of the University of Łódź Libraries, you must actively express your desire to do so. You can do this:
•    in person at any Faculty Library,
•    in person at the University of Łódź Main Library;
•    online, by sending an email requesting an account to: bul.wm@lib.uni.lodz.pl from your student or work email address registered with the University of Łódź domain.

I am a student at a university other than the University of Łódź. Can I use the library?

People from outside the University of Łódź can use the collections on site.

How can I find the books I need?

To find the books you are looking for, use the online catalogue, available on the BUŁ homepage (https://elibrary.lib.uni.lodz.pl). The catalogue allows you to search for items by author, title, subject, and also offers an advanced search option, combining, for example, the author's name with the specific title of their book. The search results can be narrowed down to items of interest, e.g. books published only in Polish before 2009.

How to borrow a book to take home?

To borrow a book to take home, you need to place an order electronically – after logging into your account in the online catalogue (https://www.lib.uni.lodz.pl/), click on the ‘Request from Closed Stacks’ button. Ordered books can be collected when their status in the reader's account changes to ‘Ready for collection’. Please make sure that the book you are ordering has the status ‘available for borrowing’ (zbiory do wypożyczeń). Do not order books that are ‘for use on site’ (zbiory do korzystania na miejscu).

What is Free Access at BWES?

Free Access is a space at BWES that is directly accessible to readers. In other words, it is an open reading room for books and periodicals with workspaces. Free Access books are marked with different coloured stickers. The colours indicate the sections in which the book is located. For example, a red stripe means finance, three blue stripes mean sociology. A list of sections (and colours) is displayed in a visible place in the reading room. Each free access book has its own call number (an alphanumeric classification containing information about the subject area and additional data about the author, edition, etc.). Free access books cannot be reserved. Simply take the selected item from the shelf. After using materials on site in the Library, please return them to the trolleys standing next to the shelves.

Can I reserve a book that is on loan?

Yes. Log in to your account in the online catalogue and click on the ‘Place hold’ button next to the specific book. When the book is returned by the previous reader and prepared for you, you will receive an email with this information. The status of the book in your account will change to ‘Ready for collection’. The book must be collected from the lending desk within 3 working days.

Can someone borrow a book on my account and on my behalf?

No, because each reader borrows books in person, presenting their library card – encoded on their student ID card, which must not be shared with third parties – to the librarian. However, any person can return a book (no ID is required for returns), or you can use the drop box on the ground floor of building E.

I ordered a book from the closed stacks, when can I pick it up?

Orders are processed from Tuesday to Friday during the circulation desk's opening hours or from the book machine between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Orders placed the previous day can be collected from 10 a.m. Orders placed after 3 p.m. can be collected the following day.
Ordered books can be collected when their status in the reader's account changes to ‘Ready for collection’. Ordered and reserved materials are available for collection for three days.

What do I need to collect an ordered book from the Library?

To collect a book, you need a student/doctoral student ID card or an electronic library card. Books must be collected in person. In exceptional cases (illness), you may use the help of another person, who must present authorisation.

How long do ordered books wait in the lending room?

Ordered books are available within 3 days of ordering, after which time they return to the closed stacks and must be reordered.

How long does it take to process an order?

For books ordered to the lending room, the processing time is 2 hours. The book must be collected within three working days (including the day of placing the order).

How and when can I extend the return date for a book?

Extensions of the book loan period, can be made independently after logging into your reader account in the online catalogue or at the Library (in person, by telephone: 42 635 52 66 or by e-mail: bibliotekaeksoc@uni.lodz.pl).
Extensions will not be possible if:
the book return date has passed,
the book has been reserved by another reader,
the reader has outstanding financial obligations to the BUŁ or the faculty library.

Each book can be extended twice, books from other faculties can be extended once.

What happens if the book return date is exceeded?

If the return date is exceeded, the reader's account will be blocked. In this situation, it is best to return the book as soon as possible.

What should I do if I lose or damage a book?

In such a situation, please contact the library. The librarians will draw up a report and inform you about further steps. Usually, you will need to repurchase the book (not necessarily a new copy – preferably one from the same year as the damaged copy) or bring another book suggested by the librarian.
