Wernisaż wystawy prac Zofii Bisiak

Place of the event: Matejki 32/38, Łódź
When: 20 February 2023 (Monday) 18:00 - 00:00

On Monday (20 February) at 6 p.m., at the University of Lodz Library the opening of the exhibition "Całe stado dmuchawców oczekuje wiatru" [A whole bunch of dandelion clocks awaits the wind], featuring handmade papers prepared by artist Zofia Bisiak will be held. The exhibition and the extensive programme of accompanying events are intended to demonstrate the wide scope of communication possibilities that paper offers on many levels.

Zofia Bisiak is a graduate in History of Art from the University of Warsaw and the author of many national, regional and community cultural education projects. She has created Poland's first educational ceramic studio in Łucznica, where she recreated art techniques forgotten in Poland (including batik). She has received numerous awards, including the special prize of the Cultural Foundation "Małe Ojczyzny – Tradycja dla przyszłości", as well as the "Award of the Minister of Culture for lifetime achievements in culture".

Prof. Ewa Latkowska-Żychska writes about Zofia Bisiak:

Zofia Bisiak also works with handmade paper. Her paper works make the viewer reflect on the complex beauty of the plant world. Zosia locks plants in the pieces of paper, where they live a new life, presenting a beauty subject to change. These images refer to the alternation of seasons, from growth through to maturity and a time of apparent loss.

They are not flowers from a flower bed. Plants that surround Łucznica from all sides are the ones that are in the centre of attention here. The kind of plants which, when being on a walk and admiring the views, we pass without looking at them at all. The artist presents them in the form of pages of a scaled-down diary. By submerging the beauty of plants in paper matter, she creates new visual spaces for them thanks to which she can share their awe-inspiring beauty with the viewer.

The exhibition is a starting point for a broader reflection on paper.

  • How did the centuries-old history of papermaking and writing begin?
  • How does this medium function in the public imagination today?
  • Paper art – what does it mean?
  • What role does paper play today?
  • What alternative does paper offer to digital reality?

The event leaders will look for answers to these questions as part of the programme accompanying the exhibition. More information about the exhibition and its programme can be found on the exhibition website (in Polish)
